QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • 60 hours of college credit or substitute certificate issued through DESE
  • Preferred previous theater experience.
  • Possession of the knowledge, skills, abilities, and physical attributes necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate or acceptable.

 

Reports to:  The High School Principal.  The position will also work with the Athletic Director to plan performances and activities.

 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The High School Drama Director will lead and manage the school’s drama and theater program, guiding students in the development of acting, performance, and production skills. The director will oversee all aspects of the theater program, including auditions, rehearsals, set design, and performances. They will inspire students, foster a love of the arts, and provide a safe, inclusive, and creative environment that promotes self-expression and teamwork.


Key Responsibilities:

  1. Program Leadership and Development:

    • Plan, organize, and direct the high school theater program, including annual productions, talent showcases, and other performances.
    • Select appropriate play scripts that align with school values, educational goals, and student interests.
    • Develop curriculum and lesson plans that cover acting techniques, theater history, set design, script analysis, and other relevant skills.
  2. Student Engagement and Instruction:

    • Conduct auditions and select cast and crew members for productions based on student ability, growth potential, and fit for the role.
    • Teach and mentor students in various aspects of theater arts, including acting, directing, stage management, lighting, sound, and set design.
    • Facilitate a collaborative environment, encouraging teamwork, responsibility, and creativity among students.
  3. Production Management:

    • Oversee all production elements, including costume and set design, props, lighting, sound, and stage management.
    • Coordinate rehearsal schedules, managing time effectively to meet deadlines and ensure a polished final performance.
    • Collaborate with school administration, parents, and other faculty to organize show logistics, ticket sales, marketing, and event promotion.
  4. Safety and Inclusivity:

    • Ensure a positive and inclusive environment for all students, celebrating diversity and encouraging respect and acceptance.
    • Enforce safety procedures for all theater activities, maintaining a secure environment on and off stage.
  5. Community and Stakeholder Engagement:

    • Build relationships with parents, the school community, and external arts organizations to foster support for the theater program.
    • Coordinate volunteer efforts and seek opportunities for students to showcase their talents within the school and broader community.

 

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary and work calendar to be established by the Board.

 

EVALUATION: The performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluations utilizing the Performance Based Support Staff Evaluation process.
